I prewash mine. I'm always shocked at how much it shrinks up.

I use a larger seam allowance. The first one I made with 1/4 inch seams had some seams come apart when it was washed. Luckily, I washed it before giving it away!

definately do the above. You lose some accuaracy, at least I do, but gain cuddly factor. I made a quilt for hubby with flannel and he loves it.

In the Fons and Porter's Magazine dated March 25, 2002 it states do not wash flannel. I wonder if it makes a difference when using flannel that is for quilters? The feel of the material is very different then the feel of the flannel for shirts. The quilt flannel is a lot thicker.

Is there much difference between quilt flannel and the flannel that you would buy at Walmart or Hancocks?

Flannel is kinda stretchy, so you may want to use a walking foot while piecing your quilt top. Also will probably need to pin
your pieces well. I'm sure your granddaughter will love it.

I have used flannel a lot, for my own and families quilts I always back them in flannel and baby quilts are always in cosy flannel. My favourite make is Northcott, especially for babies as their choice of design and quality is so good, this is one I have just finished.

I must confess to never pre-washing my batting or fabrics, cotton or flannel, and the ones that my Sister has, which are dozens, have been washed so many times and with no problems at all.

I have done a number of flannel quilts also. Biggest thing is to be sure your seam allowances are ample--Flannel tends to raffle more than plain cottons. Quilting flannel is generally heavier weight/tighter woven than shirt/pj flannel.
I do not prewash them, just let the family wash their own, which they do a lot of. One I have had to mend seams on, but I just did more machine quilting right over the seam area and it worked fine.
