You can also try different thread brands. My machine throws an absolute hissy fit when I use certain brands of thread, like gutterman and mettler.

My sewing instructors have always told me that if the underside is loopy, the problem is most likely the upper thread. Try re-threading it and also taking out the bobbin to check for loose thread or lint. Good luck!

As to the OP, yes it looks like a top tension problem. Unless something is really pulling the bobbin tension tight. <G>
I have had the thread slip out of the tension on top while sewing, and there are lots of other reasons. Good advice given.
