I just got a very nice piece of Kona muslin and I wonder how it will be to hand quilt thru it. It feels a little heavier than some of the others, and the weve is a bit tighter. Since I only hand quilt, will it be a problem?

I hand quilt with a group, using the old fashioned frame and sawhorse set up. Some of these old time members really like the Kona muslin. I also like it, although I have only been quilting for four years. We use it mostly for backing, but also on quilts that use vintage fabrics in the piecing on the front. (someone donated a bunch of it to the group) The quilt pattern on the back of a hand quilted quilt looks really quite pleasing to the eye. I think the moda muslin is a 200 thread count. anyhow, no complaints from the experienced old timers and we continue to use it.

I hand quilt it all the time, I also am only a hand quilter!
I use it on all my backs also, i love the old fashioned look.

When you put your quilt on an old fashioned frame, do you lay it out and baste it before you attach it to the frame or do you pin to the leaders and just roll it up? I have my grandmother's frame that her father made and I want to do a quilt on it but not finding clear direction on how to get started.

I have a hand made frame and I lay out the backing, batting and top, just like you would for any other type of quilting, and I baste every 4" or so before I put it on the frame.
That it a wonderful gift you have from your family's past and you should try to use it because I'm sure your Grandmother would be so proud.

It may depend on the type of frame. However, my understanding is that the old-fashioned way is to just pin it to the leaders and roll it up.
