Find a print that "speaks" of your friend! There's some computer type ones ... or if he happens to be a hunter or fisher!
Then use the Churn Dash block with the print in the centre of the Churn Dash and coordinating fabrics on the outside.
Rail fence can be a good guy pattern! Traditional rails or do the centre one twice as wide as the outside two.

I just finished the top of a 120 x 120 in dark brown, wedgewood blue and a forest scene in those colors plus tan for my oldest son I used a double Irish Chain and it went together really well and looks nice.
