Default Half Square Triangle Size

I want to make a quilt (maybe a crib or throw size) for a baby gift and want to use half square triangles. What would be an appropriate size of the squares for this size quilt? Thank you for your help.

Any size would be fine. Since you want to make a smaller quilt you might consider 3 1/2" or 4 1/2". These sizes would be unfinished sizes. The finished size would be 3" or 4". If you have a print fabric and solid with it you could put four of them together and you would have a pinwheel. Hope you know what I mean. Good luck on your quilt

You can use whatever size you want. A nice baby quilt pattern is Chevrons. It can be made with triangles or rectangles.

As already said .... whatever size you want!

Some people have been having great success with jumbo sized blocks/designs lately.
Some prefer intricate and tiny, especially for babies.
Some don't like working with either ... and go for middle of the road!

Sometimes the scale of the print you are working with, will help determine the HST size.
Or if you happen to have precuts, then that may be your deciding factor.
If you are working with yardage, then you have lots of options!

If you have a layout/design you want to do, it can be done in any size of HSTs.
Just graph it out, and calculate how it will work out.
Then choose what suits you best.

I made this quilt using 2 1/2" unfinished size HST. They finish at 2". https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictures-f5/scrappy-batik-hst-quilt-t293883.html

For baby quilts I prefer a 3 1/2" unfinished HST. I just finished a (2nd) baby quilt using 3" finished hst's and it came out beautiful. I can't wait to gift it to the new mom and dad. The baby was born on the 17th came a couple weeks early. However I was so ready!! Now I wait until the 11th night of Christmas for out get together.

This my favourite baby quilt with HST's.... They are 6 1/2" square and the pattern shows you how to do them 4 at a time. It works up really quick and looks great.
