I have seen people demo this but with a fusible backing, ironing with a teflon sheet to keep the layers from sticking to the ironing surface. Start by ironing the fusible to the back of your fabric, cut out the pieces, then iron them from the back layer to the front layer on top of the teflon sheet. Let cool and pull the piece off the teflon. It is then ready to iron onto your background fabric all in one piece.

I took a course with Maureen Goldsmith and she had us use batiste as the base. We made bougainvillea flowers (mine is still in progress (6 years later) I'll see if I can find a link that might have her technique in it. We used silk thread so that the fine thread wouldn't show. Everything is done by hand, embroidery on the actual leaf & beading.

Here's a link to her site with pictures of some of her pansies taught with that method. Looks like she calls the technique slip/off block appliqué.http://www.pastelpixels.com/mcq/index.html

Thanks for the tip. Went on line to her site and then googled off block applique see if I could see the details of doing it. Off block thread shows basting to the back of the "block" fabric and doing reverse applique. Hadn't thought of that approach. I'll let you know how it turns out. Working on design of a quilt of reef fishes so will have plenty of critters to practice on.

Did you e-mail Maureen at all? She's a very friendly person & might be willing to guide you through her method?
