I've never done hand piecing, but I'm going to be taking a 6 week trip abroad where I won't have a sewing machine, so I'd like to have a portable project I can take with me. Can someone recommend a good project idea for starting hand piecing? Maybe I can cut out pieces before I leave and take them with me.

I have one that I take with me on the plane when I travel. I do all the prep work ahead of time and the pieces really don't take up much room.

Do you like applique? If so, that is really portable.

I did a hand pieced Around the World (you start with the center like you do on a GFG) using 10 different green prints. I cut out my 2-1/2" squares, put them in zip bags in the order of usage (center, 1st round, 2nd, etc.) on a medium sized book ring along with an additional bag for needles, thread, small scissors. It would then all fit into a gallon size zip bag for ease of transport and to put the growing completed portion in. Of course once it got closer to completion as a queen size top, I had to move up to a tote bag for the whole works.

I'm leaving for a couple months back to Vanuatu in March and this is what I will be taking with me too. I just bought a template and found a pattern, and got a 3 x compartment stacking bin 1/2 price at Joann's that will fit nicely in my suitcase-now I have to decide a color theme and start picking fabrics. I am really looking forward to it-I had nothing to work on last August/Sept when I had to spend 2 months there and it drove me nuts!! Going prepared this time!
