Hand Quilting-How much is enough?

In the old days they just quilted enough to hold it together and it is printed on the package -- usually the package says something like 4 inches -- it looks lovely and classic without all the machine quilting which takes away the 'loft'.

I can't make a recommendation, but I just finished hand quilting a scant queen size that I have picked up on and off over the last 5-6 years - and I'm still not sure it is enough. I washed it and the batting did fine, but, I may add more quilting. But, like you, I'm tired of it!!!
