I am making a table runner and placemats for my sister. I will be SIDing and grid quilting and don't want the stitches to stand out because I have only machine quilted one thing, a table runner, so far. The fabric is bright red, purple, blue and green botanical designs. What color thread would not stand out? TIA

A medium gray would probably blend into the ditch pretty well.

I'd find a variagated thread with at least two of the main colors in it...and one with more of the colors would be better. Some use invisible thread but I've never had much luck with it.

I think I would also do this. It is difficult without seeing the runner to know for sure.

Thanks, I was leaning towards gray. I have a nice gray from Connecting Threads.

I would audition several colors of thread by drawing out several inches and laying them across the fabric. They will either stand out or blend. Jenny Beyer always uses a thread on the darker side because it blends better.

Neutral are always a good choice if you don't want the quilting to show.

Variegated threads are beautiful but do show alot on tops, in my experience, due to the multiple colors. I usually use them when I want my quilting highlighted.

I think a grey, or another neutral, or even an invisible thread, might be your best choice. I also do like some else suggested and pool several feet on top of my project to see what it looks like.

Usually, if I don't want it to show, I also go for a thinner thread, which will hide in the seams better.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

I use invisible thread, but I hate working with it. Reminds me of fishing line!
