I used to use a frame, but once I learned to do without it, I have never used one since.

I use a 16" wooden hoop frame. I have quilted from baby quilt to a king size with it.

The real trick to quilting without a frame, is to pin baste it or thread baste it VERY generously! Your layers WILL NOT shift and you WILL NOT have puckers because you can feel if there is something happening underneath and is easy to adjust to prevent puckers.

Just think about the freedom of not having to stop and rehoop or advance the quilt. You can just keep gettin' it....lol!

Everyone needs to try it just once and see if you don't like it better....I dare you!

I have the Q-snap and love it. you can tighten or loosen the fabric when adjustment is necessary and the tilting optional legs really save my back/shoulders from pain.

Any way to get to your MIL before she begins quilting to put her on the right track? That would save you a lot of grief, IMHO.

Georgia Bonesteel quilts in her lap without a hoop a lot of the time. It could be preference. Doubt that the quilt police will be watching and if they do who cares?

I never use a frame. I find it too cumbersome. I was taught to use a frame but don't now.

I hand quilt on some sort of frame, whether it be a round one to fit in lap, a scroll type, or a stretcher frame. I find I need a frame to keep things somewhat tight and straight.
