I'm a hand quilter. And as long as I have been had quilting, I use only 1 strand. Not condemning, I've never heard of using 2 threads. I fill it would be too hard to hand quilt with. Also, when I'm cutting the length of thread to hand quilt, I roughly go with the length of my arm, or somewhat a little shorter.

I also only use 1 strand. I think a double would be harder to pull thru and it would tangle easily. I have only tried Americana and Gutterman. I dont really care for gutterman I think it tangles easily. Next I am going to try coats and clark.

I agree on the Guterman..I also just threw out a spool of Coats and Clark because it frayed and broke easily even with thread magic..I always end up back with the Americana!

I use 1 strand of thread and YLI hand quilting thread, for me it is the best.

When hand quilting, use one strand of hand quilting thread (40 wt.). I use YLI -- it is glazed and is able to hold up under the friction of moving in and out of the fabric many times. Precensia and Auriful have unglazed quilting threads, but even though I have a spool of each to try out, I haven't done so. They come highly recommended.
