I agree. Gutermann is the best. You can get it at Joann's.

For that I use size 12 (Thick) thread.....again,....go for the coated, hand stitch brand because they make size 12 for a machine stitch too, and they are not the same.
    Jane's got it right.
When I do use a non-quilting thread, I also use beeswax on each thread length I cut. (Purchase at Joannes on the notions wall.)
Big stitch quilting, which uses a larger/thicker thread and a large-eye needle, is usually 4-5 stitches per inch (or whatever is comfortable for you - mine happens to be about 6-7 stitches). It gives wonderful interest to the overall design of the quilt, especially if you use a contrasting color thread.

One of the WalMarts near me also carries Gutermann thread. If you are interested in this thread, you might check a larger WalMart near you.

Bought the "new"thread treatment at hobby lboy last week to use for my epp gfg..it's called Thread Magic. I like it better than the other...Thread Heaven, I think is the name....sure this will be used a lot when I set up this orphan quilt........

Whatever hand quilting thread you pick, be SURE you don't use it on your machine.

    that depends on the thread.
since i don't hand quilt, but have such a big collection of gutterman for hand quilting, i tried using it - top thread only - for machine quilting. it works just fine for straight lines, soft curves, etc. i haven't tried it yet for simple free-motion (such as stipple or meander). i have a feeling it wouldn't be ideal for that.

now i'm curious, so i guess i'll try that soon.

i don't know how it compares in price to other brands but i assume it would stand up to all of them in terms of quality.

i have used the Americana in the past and liked it.
i use the Gutterman now when i need a thread of that weight because i was gifted a 25-lifetime supply in all sorts of colors many years ago.

and guess who doesn't hand quilt. lol lol lol

I am a hand quilter. I also use Gutterman's hand quilting thread. I prefer it to Coats and Clark. I use Roxanne needles. They are a bit pricey. I never thought that the Roxanne needles would make a difference, but they sure do. I have discovered wool batting and will not go back to W & N for hand quilting. I do run each new thread through an old candle that I have sitting around. The bit of wax from the candle makes it all much easier to quit and easier on my hands.

You can also run your needle through your hair to make it slide easier.

I love using YLI thread for hand stitching. It is very smooth to use and helps me enjoy hand quilting.
