Wouldn't it be 2 1/2? That would give you a quarter inch on each side.

Are you paper piecing? I would think the pieces would be 2 1/2" if you are doing standard cutting pieces. On a mini quilt be sure to make your seam allowances closer to 1/8". Each of your unfinished pieces would need to measure 1 1/4". So each hst would need to be 1 1/4" for the bow tie. For the Churn dash you squares and hst would need to be 3/4". It has been many years since I made a mini quilts, the girls were young. I still have all my Mini Quilting magazines. I hope I got the sizes right. You may want to convert to paper piecing for these small blocks. I actually found it much easier.

Tulip43 ... This is where graph paper can come to the rescue
when one wants to downsize, or upsize a quilt block.

Draw out what you want your end result to be, and you will know!
Just be sure to remember to add your 1/4" seam allowances for each piece.

I agree with "QuiltE". I get out my graph paper and draw out the block. Always add your 1/4" to your finished drawn pattern. I didn't do that once and had a very small block. Oh well-back to the drawing board (graph paper) for me.
