Don't count on her growing out of hello kitty. Sarah has been into HK since 3 y/o. She is now 11 y/o and going strong in her love of all things HK. I see tons of young adult women who are into HK. HK is just something that can be in your life foe a really long time. I would be more worried about designing one that will grow with her....

I was thinking the same thing as alikat110 - my daughter's best friend is 33 years old and still has her Winnie the Pooh baby blanket.

Find a Hello Kitty color book, trace the pictures you would like to use on muslin and color with Crayolas and set the Crayola with a hot iron. If you don't know how to do this, PM me and I will send detariled instructions. I have taught several classes in this technique and made several Crayola quilts. Yes, it will withstand laundering, although you probably should use warm water instead of the hottest water you've got, but even if the colors fade, you can always recolor them and reset them. When my granddaughter was 6, she helped me color the purple cows on our purple cow quilt. The label gives her full credit for her artistry. froggyintexas

One I did last year. Applique in my opinion is cheaper by using your old scraps. I used a coloring book and any pictures I could find. My great granddaughter loves it.

Maybe pick one focus fabric that is HK and mix regular others with it. My DGD loves HK too. She is 11 and it is all over her room and clothes.

I, too, have used coloring sheet found on the web, to applique. Or, you could print an outline onto fabric and have her color a center block. I did a crayon coloring on a wall hanging and hand embroidered around the coloring of a Sun Bonnet Sue years ago. I don't know how well it would wash, since it's in a wall hanging.
