Sometimes, when I don't follow a predetermined size, I take my fabrics and either fold them to the size I think will work, or I lay one fabric over the other and block the side excess. You can then see if your size works for you or if you need to adjust.

This is an easy pattern because you have the choice to either precut the pieces or to cut strips and just keep adding the right color.
