I do hope you can get it up and running, but my guess that is why it was for sale.... :(

Where are you located. There is a terrific Janome dealer in Pa. and the turn around time is 2weeks. I deal with them all the timee. I have a 3 Janome's and one of them is the 3500, a step up from yours. However I have never had a problem with it some can not be of any assistance.

Could be an electrical problem with the foot pedal or the motor. Did it smell hot? Hopefully not. Go back to the yard sale and ask the former owner if they had this problem. If they are honest they will tell you why they sold a machine that is so highly recommended and used.

You definitely need expert advice and help with this but a call to Janome will be the start of the process.
Every journey starts with a single step.

Maybe that's why this brand new machine was in a yard sale :-(
Good luck!

Thank you to everyone for your ideas and help. My husband was able to diagnose my problem, ordered the part and will get it up and going for me. Thank the Lord for a great husband.
