I have one in my sewing room. I have had it for almost 15 years, and it is rarely closed. The only problem I have had is finding a new cover for it...so I had to make my own. I have found that since I rarely closed it, it was a great place to store my long cutting rulers.
I'd say go for it!! Save yourself and the dog.
