Hit a couple yard sales.
My little niece was over for a couple hours on Saturday. Mom and Grandma had to work. Hit a couple garage sales. She picked up a small travel iron for $1.00 and cutting mat for $1.00. Brought them home and DH cut the mat so it was just the right size for her to use. It was rolled and cracked. She paid for it before I saw it because I would have tried to get a better price. But he got 2 sizes out of it for her to where it could lay flat. Had a briefcase that the boards fit just right and she could put her rulers and some other notions in. I have the best time when she comes over.

try the soaking thing Tess, You might be surprised how it renews...not new, but flat and less cut upon looking. Could dress it with some endust? Try one and if it works, let her renew the other one?
Lucky you. I have one niece who when little stayed a week each summer. I managed to get one 6" cross stitch sewing project out of her, over about 4 years I have it framed in my sewing room. She did love making those looped hot pads, as I did when little.
On the other hand she asked specifically if I'd hem her wedding dress and when she saw the trimmings asked if I could fashion something for her doggie who will be ring bearer. A lovely sassy scarf with an envelope pocket was produced

Oh, how wonderful!! I have so much fun sewing with my niece and nephew when they visit too. They are both into it, and old enough now that I can safely turn them loose with my studio and not worry about them injuring themselves or breaking the machines. I just set out "approved" fabrics and they go to town! They will be occupied for HOURS, making "presents" for me and their mom while I get to catch up with my sister. And then we'll work on stuff together too, but my sister gets bored, LOL.
Awww, I'm missing them like crazy now! I'm going to have to call my sister - it's time for a visit!!
