I would stitch on the diagonal and not even worry about taking the binding off. I'd stitch right up to it.

Instead of ties, you COULD make a small decorative stitch where the tie would go, like a loopy flower type thing.

I think I am going to stitch in the ditch vertically between each row--not taking the bindings off but starting and stopping at the binding. I also found a row I skipped on the original quilting on one of them, so I'll look all of the quilts over.
