How Did Everybody Get Into Quilting??

It was Jan. 2007, Mom and Dad's 50th was in June and I thought a quilt with some of the pictures we had taken over the years might be a good present. I went to my Aunt, told her I wanted to make a quilt, I sewed on her machine, made a few things, coasters, small mats. The next christmas I got my own machine, just like my Aunts. Have made 3 quilts, and two in the making...... Mom and Dad's quilt is only half finish, (it is almost 4 years late!) In june they will be married 54 years! We are trying to finish it before this june. We have started over on it 4 times, it looks like this is the winner! It has to be this year. Mom has colon cancer, I'm sure this is not her last one, but you don't know. I did get her quilt finished, with the help of my Aunt, (who did the most work) we gave it to her on the first day of chemo. I am still working on my brother's and my other Aunts' quilts that I gave them for christmas, the tops are done, I'm just waiting on the quilting.

I begain quilting after years of garment construction. Quilt shop opened up next door to my employer and I was so totally in awe of the quilts that were being displayed and the gorgeous fabrics. Brandi, the store owner, convinced me that I could do it......so I started out with a king size "tesselating stars" (not sure that's how you spell it)..needless to say..that was MANY quilts ago. It's very addicting and relaxing.

Your storu was wonderfu. i learned to sewin 4H brfore the age to join. My granmother made quilts at the farm next doo. I remember at a young age playing under the quilting frame. I also remember that after the ladies left if the stitches weren't up to her standards she would wripe them out. I made alot of my clothes as a tennager. My other grandmother came to live with us when I started High scool. She was a professional seamtress.I continued to sew thru 20-30's. I took a class at my church and borrowed some books from the teacher and I have been hooked ever since. That was back in 1983. I have vision problems now so it is hard to match points. I am into crazy quilting now and also enjoy applique.I guess I was taught to sew it right the first time or ripe it out. So I do some ripping. Genny

After a very long time of pleading and bribing (with Tim Hortons coffee) I was able to talk the teacher into doing the pattern for a queen size quilt. She did this with UNDISGUISED resistance. Anyway, was I in for a shock, we would do a step in class and our homework was to complete that step for the whole quilt for the next step in the next class,, Well I stayed up all night preparing, and after cutting out 600+ 6" squares and 920 little 2 squares (learned to use a rotory cutter) I was ready for the next step. After each class (6 week course) I spent the entire week till the next class carefully completing each step. Each week the teacher looked so surprised that I had completed every single bit of homework. OMG I was so proud of this quilt...The very last class, my teacher turned to the class and said - I would like to publicly apologize to Wendy (I thought omg what did I do) and she said in all the years of teaching, whenever she took her time to rework a lap quilt to a full size quilt for a student, they never completed it and this was the reason she really didn't want to do it for me. But I made her proud!! And that's how I got started in quilting :) And I've never looked back. It was a tied quilt (never would do another one) and I can tell you I had the sorest fingers in the world. Why I kept quilting, I'll never know, lol I struggle with it because I don't have anybody in my family that sews, but I've learned a lot on this board and on You Tube....thanks for listening, Here's a couple pics of that very first quilt Wendy

I have been sewing since I was about 10. I have made all kinds of garments including my friends wedding dress. I made all of my prom dresses in high school to save money. I took a quilting class 27 years ago, it was all lecture. At the time I had 1 child. I never did any actual quilting. I did the books for my husbands business, plus other duties and had 4 kids. Coached soccer teams, PTA etc so no time to quilt. One day about 5 years ago I decided to make a purse. I went and bought fabric. I brought it home and was trying to decide which color to use where. All of the sudden I decided it looked like a quilt. So I went to a quilt shop and picked out a pattern. I decided I was going to paper piece. I made a queen sized paper pieced star out of the 50 state star book. I came out great and I guess the rest is history.

My sister had been quilting for years and so wanted me to join her. I was hesitant at first, but I agreed to take a beginner's quilting class. She also bought me a lovely Bernina 1090 sewing machine.
My sister taught me a lot before I even took the quilting class. I will forever be indebted to her!
At the time I started quilting our mother was very sick. This was my therapy during a difficult time in my life. It is the only thing that kept me sane.
After Mama died, I quit quilting for years. My life took a different path. However, this past year my husband and I moved. I now have a dedicated sewing room. Once again, I am sewing almost everyday and I LOVE it!
My sister taught me a lot before I even took the quilting class. I will forever be indebted to her!

I lived with my Irish Grandmother for several years while growing up. I was only seven or eight and she said all boys should know how to repair their clothes (sewing buttons etc). She taught me to do this plus quilt, knit, crochet and embroidery. Of course I hated this--I wanted to be outside playing ball and such with the other boys. She made me practice an hour a day. Now that I have been married for 45 years and children are gone I have time to do all the needle work. I made my sons the sweaters and my wife fromals for the military balls attended thru 25 years of service in the Army. I am really glad this lady took the time with me. She was a great Grandmother. She was a good teacher and a the best grandma and I loved her so and do not regret a minute of this time we spent together. I still sew on her 66-1 redeye treadle singer and would sew on none other. One time in band camp... JUST KIDDING!
I was going to school with a lady for medical coding and billing at the start of 2010. She would talk about things she would make and talk about quilting all the time. We became very close friends and she is the one who taught me back in Sept 2010. The first quilt I made was a baby quilt for my Mom. Since then, I have been sewing and have enjoyed it thoroughly!! Not to mention the vast fountain of knowledge I get from the wonderful people on and off the board. On a more sentimental note, this gives me a bond to share with my deceased aunt and with my Mom. My mom sews and I commend her on reading the old patterns from back in the day, I would so flunk at it!

I always made my own cloths then out on my own I made all my window treatments /re-ulphostered furniture When I found out I was pregnant I didn't like the baby blankets in any of the stores - I spotted a picture of a quilt on a G/H mag and I thought I would just make baby quilts since 1973 I'll bet 99% of my sewing time has been quilting something for some one My G/GB's are using the quilts I made for my son as well as new ones My oldest GS wanted a chili pepper quilt when he was3 and now he's23 and needs a new chili pepper quilt and I found the same exact fabric at JoAnns so my next project has been decided for me
