Another option to whiten/brighten is old-fashioned but tried and true: La France. It is a powdered bluing product meant to be used in the wash. It does wonders for socks, nursing uniforms, lab coats, towels, etc., and doesn't harm colors. It is relatively inexpensive, too. You can find in the laundry aisle of many grocery stores.

I like to use borax in the wash. We use it to get the stank out of our running clothes, but it can also help whiten and is gentler than bleach. Just throw in a cup of borax when you start the load, stop the machine before agitation begins and let it soak for a half-hour or so.

Thankyou all for your advice, I tried the oxyclean and it did a good job, not quite all white but mostly... Have to say my quilt looks a hundred times better now than it did... I might try something else later, but it already looks pretty good!
