I am creating a heaven in my basement for my quilting. The electriciian was called and the drywaller is done. Floor is layed, now I tackal the material. Bolts are easy but those yards and fat quarters are a mess. Any suggestions?

Lots of different ideas here. Do a search for organization or sewing room and look at everyones pictures. I am sure something will strike you as being the right solution for your space. Good luck and congratulations on your new space.

cool article to read (lady took bunk beds, no mattress, made boards and use it to store bolts of fabric)

I have my smaller pieces, less than a yard in one area by colors and then my more than one yard , also by color .

that way if I am looking for fabric , I don't grab a piece and think great only to discover its too small  LOL

I sort mine too...FQ's and less than a yd in one spot, sort according to colors, one yd plus folded in another area sorted to colors. Special novelty fabric in another area, seasonals too. Everything is on shelves, or in smaller totes.

I sort primarily by color, greens on one shelf, blues on another, some shelves have more than one color, kid's stuff together, any that are actually planned to go together (fairies) in their separate stack - put the proposed coordinating fabrics in that stack too...

Play with it a bit and see what works for you. I have modified mine several times since DS got the storage shelves put together a couple months ago. Still have quite a bit not yet sorted.
