Borders are my weakness :( Mine are so often plain and boring :( Sometimes it's just laziness, sometimes Im just out of ideas by then, sometimes I've moved on creatively to the next idea, so my borders are blah.

Borders can make or break a quilt. I also make art quilts but have never used a facing, maybe I should try that. I typically create a border that hopefully "frames" the quilt, using a 3 part border and mitering the corners.

I take as much time with the border as I do picking out the rest of the fabrics. It really can make a quilt better! I made a wallhanging in a star pattern all greens. I don't like green that much and really didn't think much of the project until I put a border on it. Wow! Changed the whole thing and it bacame one of my favorite projects.

I do not use borders to simply "enlarge" the quilt.

[quote=patchsamkim]The border fabric is very important and can make or not make a quilt just right. The border is like the picture frame. It pulls all the colors together from the quilt and gives the eye a place to rest...

patchsamkim - I couldn't have put it into words as well as you did.

I seldom use borders...and never on my art quilts (I finish by envelope). On functional quilts, my designs are intended to flow to the edge without the constraint of a border. My avatar quilt is a rare exception that needs a border.

I think a border is what finishes a quilt. It adds to it for me.

Borders are important to me.

I use them to make the quilt larger, I make them plain and simple, and I add as much hand quilting to them as I can. I prefer solids, but if the fabric reads as a solid I'm happy.

Most quilts need something to finish them off, but that being said, what is best should be dictated by the central part of the quilt. IMHO it is absolutely necessary that the border accent and frame the center. Many times I've made patterns and completely changed the border to better reflect what I like in the center. I did that with my avatar here.

That is a really pretty art quilt, looks like a painting.
