I would say you are normal. People deal with situations differently than others.

Two years ago I did not quilt for about 10 months. I learned to knit socks (both socks at the same time), and I became obsessive, and I knitted socks for months.

I, too, have gone long stretches without sewing. Just can't get "in the mood". I would go into my quilting room and get out my quilt kits, fabric, magazines, books, etc. and check them all out. I'd read patterns from beginning to end and pet my fabric and then I'd put everything away and turn off the light and shut the door. I did that for months. Then one day when I was on the floor looking through my quilt kits, I actually had the desire to quilt one. Magic! My mood changed and I've been quilting ever since. I went about 6 months without quilting then and it's been about 4 months now that I've been quilting. I don't know what happened to me, but thankfully, I'm back on the saddle again!

I think the longest was about 4 years .. can't remember the exact day I stopped or when I started again. Life was just too hard at the time and I just could not squeeze in one more thing ... It seemed stressful to even think about starting a project .. that I knew would go unfinished.

Grannyp70 Hope you are on your way to healing. I live with back pain, so I understand - sometimes it just plain stinks! Prayers for a speedy recovery

There was a period of about 20 some years when I did no sewing. Becoming a single mother and going to work fulltime and raising two kids took everything out of me. Then when my daughter became an adult, she said that I needed something to do and waiting until retirement to sew again was silly, and we embarked on quilting together. We bought cheap Kenmores and started. (Which by the way are stil going strong! Good machines.) A few years later she bought me my first Pfaff.

Now she has had to give up sewing for a while - too busy, house is too small, husband is ill. She misses it and will come back some day.

So yeah - like 20 years or so!

I've gone up to a year or more. My life would get too hectic and sewing would become just one more task. I find that I don't enjoy it when I feel pressured in other aspects of my life. But I eventually come back to it. I'm OK with that.

I love this thread and realize that I too, have had down time on sewing over the years. Can hardly believe that because sewing a bit each day/evening is my grounding time and it calms my day so I look forward to it every day. If I don't have the energy to concentrate, I just sew strips onto foundation for string blocks and it brings the calm I need at the end of the day. I have made so many quilts for friends and family that they don't want to even see me coming with a bag! I still love to buy fabric, try new patterns and all that goes with quilting, so now I make most of my quilts lap size and donate them to our Cancer Society who give them to cancer patients. I know these quilts are much appreciated and I don't have to do a lot of planning or fussing, just make they pretty. I hope those of you in down time find encouragement from these posts to pick up your sewing projects and renew your love of sewing.

I've never gone longer than 2-3 months. Most recently, my mother broke her hip so I stayed with her for most of October...now I'm so behind with my own stuff I don't know when I'll get back to sewing.
