I have 30 year old quilts, and 1 year old quilts...and they both look great. I agree with the washing, and cleaning methods wearing our quilts prematurely. (I once had a house fire and my friends insisted on Dry cleaning my quilts--Turned out that was worse for them than the smoke damage!!) I don't look at mine as "heirloom quilts", but rather at utility quilts. I want the recipient to love and use them all of their lifetime...and that is as far as I think about it.

when I give a quilt, I tell the person If it isn't worn out in 25 years, you didn't love it. That lets them know that I mean for them to use it.

Thank you all so much for your response! (I didnt get mail notification)
Of course I want my quilts being used but the thought came up as I am working on a DJ. It will take a couple of hundred hours to finish the top not to speak of the quilting.
I ask myself why someone would spend that much time for a quilt!? Of course I learn a lot and it is fun but I would hate the idea that the quilt (if I ever finish it lol) would not last more than a couple of years.

I'm going to keep the DJ for myself. I will have to make it larger for my queen size bed -- i like to have at least 18 inches fall on the sides. So I will make some blocks with the colors reversed. I am planning to do it in blues and cream muslin. The blues are from my stash. What happens after I'm gone isn't my worry.

I knew a lady who made the most magnificent applique quily and hand quilted it. She wanted to be wrapped it in her coffin and be burried with it. I always thought -- how selfish

I don't know if mine will last that long or not. I know my daugthers love the things I make therefore I know they will love them while they have them. I have one of my great grandmother's quilts, several of my grandmothers and aunts. I believe once I am gone they will have a good home with my girls.
