An 80/12 is still a big needle for piecing - what weight thread do you use? I would use a 75/11 with a 50 or 60 wt thread.

that is a cop out, you shouldn't have to upgrade to get a machine that works, a lot here do a lot of work on the most basic of machines, taking advantage of a machine that doesn't work properly to sell a higher end machine is a crappy way to do business. if they knew that to start with why wasn't that machine or something similar suggested at the time you purchased this one?

Any machine should feed two layers of fabric through without you doing anything but guiding it.
I think I'd call that dealer something but not sweet.

I've heard a lot of people (maybe a grand total of 5) say they had to send their new machine back for adjustments.

I dont sew thru two layers of fabric. I sew thru several layers, mostly fusible fleece and home decor. shes not trying to sell me a fancier machine actually, I am thinking of just going with a Straight stitch which costs the same amount as the the elna 6600 and that will plow thru leather if I so desire.

I'm sorry, I assumed you were piecing patchwork. Hence my comment regarding the needle. I'm sure the other ladies were only trying to offer you help and advice, as was I.

good idea.
