How much did the original Featherweights cost?
#21
My dad bought one for my mom for Christmas , in 1940 from a hardware store in Alexandria La. It has the hard case and all the attachments and the original book as well. He paid about $90.00 for it. I learned to sew on it when I was about 10 and sewed on it until after I was married when I got my own Singer. I am now the proud owner of mom's featherweight and it still runs beautifully.

I have a friend that has her origional Featherweight, her husband bought it brand new about 1950. dont know the price, think $50 or $60, but they made payments for it. She still sews on it. Yes, she is about 85.

I purchased one in 1961 that was secondhand for $50.00 from a Singer dealer, I think he said they the new ones were over $100. Of course at that time they were also not making them except in Clydesbank and I don't think they were very easy to come by in the 60's.

Isn't it interesting the wide range of prices paid, even "back then" (as my kids would say)? I LOVE sewing machines, but I hate the nebulous, secretive pricing, that is, that two identical machined bought on the same day, from the same dealer, might go outcthe door for different prices. Guess it's been going on a long time that way. There was a similar discussion on a yahoo group about the original sales price of the Bernina 830 Record. Same result, a very wide range of prices paid.

As you can see, the auction finished at $56.88 in July 2011.

I did notice, though, it was eBay in the Philippines - hadn't come across that before.
