I'm curious if anyone has had a problem from info gathered from this board being used to hack into their accounts or have had any harm come to them? As several posters noted most of this info is in the public domain anyway. Am I missing something?

The first time I spotted this site was when I was using Google to find info about something quilt-related. I was thrilled at the time. That's what Google is all about - finding what you're interested in wherever it might occur on the Internet.
The Internet is not a good place to post anything you don't want to share with the whole world. I much prefer a very open site like this to something like Facebook which gives the illusion of privacy. All you have to do is read Failbook to see just how un-private that might be.
My only issue about this site is that I can't delete something I may have typed in error or a double post. I don't know what causes all the double posts, but there's usually at least one for every 3-4 pages. Why not add a "delete" button for the poster to manage these things?

I google my last name, it is unique in that everyone in the US with that last name is a relative. Very interesting to see what everyone is up to.

I am not a techie genius, but I know that if you are on the internet in any way, shape, or form then your are in WORLD! That's just the way it is. I have almost given up on trying to keep anything private, because frankly, if someone wants that badly to find out about me, they can and will, no matter what I do! I figure I am a pretty boring gal, so generally I won't be bothered. That being said, we all need to be smart about what we share about family, financial info, etc.
Several years ago, my checking account was wiped out because my debit card was compromised at a gas station. Hundreds of people were all targeted at the same time, so there was a local investigation, etc. Other than not using credit or debit cards at all, I don't see how I could have prevented that.
I don't believe in throwing caution to the wind, but I also am not going to live in a fearful bubble. If posting to this board puts me available publicly - so be it. With all the millions of people posting stuff every day to the WWW my chances of being singled out and taken advantage of are probably pretty slim. I hope...
