How wide do you cut your binding fabric?
My "go to" width to cut binding fabric is 2 1/2". I fold it in half and sew it on, then fold over and stitch closed. However, a new pattern that I'm working on is asking for a 3 1/2" width. I'm not sure why. Perhaps just for the design/look of the quilt. That got me thinking about how wide is too wide, or too narrow. How wide do you go?
Thanks, Cindy

Yes - 2 1/2" is my standard too, but if I'm making something that won't get 'wear and tear' like a wall hanging, I usually cut 1 1/2" so don't fold.
I've never done wider. I'd be too apprehensive about getting the measurements right when sewing on the binding so the quilt sandwich fills it.
Would love to see a pic of it when done and how far in you had to stitch the binding on.

Thanks Knitette, I haven't cut the binding yet. I was waiting to see what others might suggest first. Right now, I'm thinking that I'm just going to go with my regular, 2 1/2" width. I have the same reservations that you do regarding the binding being full.

I find that 2 1/4" works best for me. I've tried other widths but always come back to this size. If I want a wide binding, I just add a final border of the appropriate width, then bind with the same fabric cut 2 1/4". I get the same look, but without the hassle.
