I'm chuckling here. I found the sewing manual to DH's Grandmother's treadle machine.
Page 1 cautions the user on quality oil, new needles, and good thread.
On Page 2.
A Few of the Simple Rules to Follow
1st Keep the machine Clean and Well Oiled
2nd Use the Best Quality of Thread and have the Right Size Needle For the Thread.
3rd Use Genuine Needles. Don not expect to do perfect work with poor needles.
4th Be Sure the machine is Properly Threaded. Better see threading instructions on page 9.
...there are 3 more, but you get the gist of it.
Guess some things never change!

I change rotary blade at fist skip. I don't see a reason to wait. I have a sharp blade experience every cut. I see so many try to get the last cut as possible out of a blade. The blade doesn't care so why the contest of wills? LOL
I don't change needles as often as I should so I use the titanium coated ones that stay sharp longer.

I am bad about both the needle and the blade. Unfortunately i have several cutters so when i skip, i get out a different one! I know i will eventually Have to change the blade but still!! And i never fight with my needle but i do not change every project. My Bernina is an oil hog so i do that every project...
