Downey sponsors Quilts for Kids. They will send you a kit with precut pieces & ask you to add batting. They get & distribute THOUSANDS of quilts. Google Quilts for Kids and you will see. This is a highly organized charity with amazing volunteers! They ask you to add a quilt of your own if you can. Simple patterns are online. I have made a bunch for them but now I am supporting a newer group.

This looks like a great cause. I do have a question...what if you're pretty new to quilting. Do they send difficult kits or are they pretty simple ie. 9 patch, pinwheels, that kinda thing.

My Downy quilt was the first actual quilt I made. They are really easy, simple patterns to make. I had made a doll quilt, potholders, and tablerunners but my Downy one was the biggest one I had made, and I didn't have any trouble with it. It's a great way to get some practice and contribute to a great cause at the same time.

I think I've had my darn downy quilt for 6 MONTHS now. It wasn't cut right and I didn't realize it until I had it all together. So I have to rip a bunch out and fix it, and it'll be smaller than their recommended size. It kinda deflated my enthusiasm for the project and I got completely stalled on it.

And before someone asks, I did put it together correctly. lol. It was the borders that weren't cut right-some are narrower in some areas. The middle went together just fine.

It sounds like a neat project, but how upset do they get if you don't have an extra quilt of your own to send?

sending in a quilt of your own along with theirs isn't a REQUIREMENT for participating in the program. It's just something they ask you to do if you can. Don't hesitate to ask for a quilt if you can't send another one in with it. They need people to make the kits they do have and appreciate any help they can get with this. If you are an experienced quilter or have a group or guild that would like to do this project together, they will send more than one quilt kit.
