I saw that show too and got the book from the library. i made 2 sets of potholders in about 15 minutes. it took me longer to pick out the fabric. i used insulbrite inside because it is heat resistant. i think that you could use a regular zig zag or overcast stitch because all your seams are inside and wouldnt ravel as much anyway.

I love my serger! Maybe someday you will break down and get one. It sure makes life easier while sewing garments and accessories.
Maybe you could use a straight stitch and cut it out with a pair of pinking sheers. I used to do things like that before the serger.
