Flynn method works great.....you need to measure your quilt top and add in the extra needed to quilt (your prefered amount) then use the formula.....It works really great and the diagonal seam almost disappears especially on allover print backs........and it really saves fabric !!!!

I had never heard of diagonal backing...always pieced it vertically or horizontally, and had lots of waste. I'm going to look this up. John describes the math but not so much on the cutting and piecing.
Ohhhhhhh wait wait wait. I get it. Once you know how much fabric to start with, you just cut it on the diagonal, then slide the two triangles together until you get the width you need. Then sew the diagonals (okay, you have to be careful of the bias) ... and he says you could even insert a strip of another fabric if you need it even wider (and it's probably more interesting than a vertical or horizontal stripe).

If you use the calculator in this thread it figures the overhang in with the calculation.
I almost always use this method for any quilt back that would have to be pieced- the diagonal seam distributes the bulk of the seam better when the quilt is rolled for the quilting process. Some of the other piecing way links on this thread do not do this.
