We always just did it like we were tying shoes, but tied it three times and no bows.

Are you referring to the knot in your needle thread? I use it for all my sewing. I heard someone describe that it is like the needle is a snake about to swallow the end of the thread. You hold the needle and end of thread between thumb and finger, with other hand wrap the dangling thread round the needle several times, grab the 'windings' and pull down the needle (snake swallowing)--just continue to pull the 'windings' down the thread to the end. Makes a great knot. I wind 3 times for burying in the quilt sandwich. Is this what you are trying to remember? Wish I could demo. I'm sure it must be on you tube --everything is!
yes, here it is! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDMXG--BvJo

This is a good description. One thing to remember is that you hold your needle with the thread through it point side up. Take the end of the thread and lay it along the needle with the cut end of the thread pointing down toward the eye end of the needle. Wrap the thread around 3-5 times. Finger nails help sliding it off the needle and down the thread. If there's a tail on the end of the thread after the know forms I clip that off.

If you are talking about tying a quilt, instead of quilting it. I use crochet thread and tie a knot two times.

Welcome to this board.
