The strips can vary in size in the piano key border. They don't all have to be the same size.

When I did mine, I sewed long strips together (they were 2.5" from jelly rolls but any width should work) and then I cut them to the width I wanted for my border (plus seam allowances) and sewed them together. Then sewed them to my quilt. They weren't super random or scrappy this way but I was very happy with it. Here's a picture of the quilt.

If you don't mind the repeat, I'd sew strips of whatever width you like X the WOF. That will create a strip such as in strip piecing. Then cut that into the lengths you need for the width of the border. It should eliminate the possibility of the strip becoming wonky and a lot quicker than sewing those individually.

Notice on the quilt above that she used cornerstones on the corners so no problem with how to make that look good, too. Could use any block that pleases you, even a solid without piecing another block.

one thing I have learned doing my piano key border was to stitch along the length of the outer side, before attaching it to the quilt, otherwise I had too many seams undone

I would love to do one but I'm always worried about the corners not being even. I guess if you use different widths it wouldn't be a problem, right?
Gale, I love yours!

When I do one, if I want mitered corners, I'll make corner blocks that are the mitered corner. Then if I need to adjust the width, I'll do that somewhere in the middle of the row (or maybe a few places) with a slightly larger or narrower strip.

That way my corner miters are way easier, and my strips line up nicely.

I'll use a different corner block often times too.

What is the problem you're having? Are you uncertain how to do the corners, or perhaps how wide to make the "keys"?
...i think the same as you. i also do "wonky" piano key borders. my favorite . i take scraps of varying widths, lengths, shapes and sew together crazy quilt style. press, lay out straight and trim one side then the other to width i want. my grand tresures love these style of borders on their quilts.
