Default I Need A Miracle!

I made a little over a hundred 16 patches (4 x 4) out of 1.5" squares. I knew my seams were off after a few, but I kept going. My plan was to put a plain block in-between each patch block so if I had to cut the plain block down it wasn't a problem. Well..., my 16 patches are 4 3/4 x 4 3/4 and instead of putting a plain block in-between each patch, I want to use a sawtooth star. I've worked on this for the past week but I'm getting nowhere. My star blocks are either too small or too large. Maybe I need help with my measurements on the star block, maybe a 4 3/4" star block isn't possible. I need help, or a miracle!

Ok, maybe I'm being too simplistic but, how about cutting your 4 and 3/4 blocks down to 4 and 1/2? Would that help?

I'm assuming the finished size should be 4 1/4". I've attached a PDF with rotary cutting charts.

If it's actually 4 3/4" finished, let me know.

I gave cutting my 16 patches down, but decided against it.

I'll whip it up for you in EQ.
Lynda, I really would appreciate it if you would do this for me. I want a 4 3/4" unfinished block

I just added it to my message above. I hope it does the trick!

This may sound a little strange, but.....
What if you make the saw tooth star with the same size squares you used for the 16 patches? If your seams are "wrong" the same way, it might come out the same size. ??

Great minds think alike, but for some reason it didn't work.

Thanks Linda, I'll give it a shot.

I'm going to be brutally honest here. If your 16-patch came out 1/4" short, then you are having a problem with your scant 1/4" seam. That problem will be compounded in a more complex block, like the sawtooth star, and trying to construct it using odd measurements will be even more difficult. Do you have any experience with paper piecing? If so, you could draw out the star to the size you want, paper piece each section (top, middle, and bottom, and sew them together. Then work on your 1/4" seam for the next project.
