I found super cute baby quilt pattern today on Moda Bake Shop. It's called Pinwheel Pals (http://www.modabakeshop.com/2017/05/...als-quilt.html). The pattern calls for one layer cake using Lily and Will Revisited by Bunny Hill Designs. From this layer cake, you can make a boy quilt and a girl quilt. Issue: I need two boy quilts. (This is where you all come in!) Do I buy two layer cakes and save the pink fabrics for those who may have girls in the future, OR do I buy yardage and cut my own?

IF I am to buy yardage, how do I figure out how many fabrics to purchase and how much of each? This is what always stumps me, even though I have been quilting forever!

since there's not too much of a variety of fabrics, i'd buy yardage.

I would just make my own. Layer Cakes are 10" squares.

You would need (11) 1/4 yd cuts of fabric to be enough for this project... plus all the additional recommended background / border fabrics.

Or, there are other layer cakes out there that are mainly blue.

I've never used layer cakes or any pre-cuts, even though I have been given jelly rolls and charms as gifts. (THey are still nice and new in package, saying "don't just stand there, use me!")

The hesitation I have is that if I screw up a cut, I'd have to hope I had enough of that fabric left in my pack. It's a big risk.
Sure it's convenient if you trust yourself.

THe other issue is the prewashing. I don't trust colors not to run, and it's a pain to test all those precuts individually in water. I don't want to get a whole new tangent going about the issue, but I'm advising for yardage for both the cutting and bleeding risk factors.

Besides, why buy the girl fabric if you don't need it?

1/4 yard cuts won't get you a 10-inch square. You could get fat quarters.

Actually, the pattern never uses a full 10" square - the biggest required is 8 7/8" for the large HST's, so linear quarter yards would work as well.

I would either buy an all-boy layer cake, or use yardage. I haven't checked Bree123's calculations, but they seem correct for yardage to replace the layer cakes.

I'm with zozee. I never buy precuts for the reasons she cited: what if I mess up and need more of a particular fabric? I like to prewash my fabrics, and also because most of those are cut with pinking shears, which would be too inaccurate for me to line up. (I also hear sometimes they aren't all cut the same size.)
