My quilting friend was over today and I was quilting in the ditch on the long seams across and down on a quilt. I trimmed the batting and backing and stay stitched around the quilt. I then put in the washer. My friend was like What? I said I want to get the basting spray out of the quilt before doing the main quilting on it. She said you can't do that. My reasoning is I want the quilt layers loose. I machine quilt and press with starch to get the quilt very stiff before quilting it and the spray will cause wrinkles when pressed. Works for me. She said I have never heard of anyone washing a quilt then quilting it. LOL

I would not even try this. one reason I don't do all the prep work you do. Never use starch.

I ended up doing this on my most recent whole cloth because I totally messed up ... it was a lot more work than I wanted it to be.

I finished it this morning. It is a about a 60 x 70 quilt. I didn't have to worry about puckers or wrinkles because the SITD held the quilt in place. I quilted one block at a time with an easy freehand design. Now the binding which will take much longer. I get bored with binding and usually do a few inches at a time.

i do that sometimes if i am not sure the quilt is going to look great after it's washed.
i don't want to waste the effort of binding something that won't look good enough to give to anybody.
if it turns out yucky i use it outside or in the car when i'm transporting dogs.

I would think it depends on the batting. if it requires tight stitching, i would definitely not wash it before quilting. ever.

I have done this with every type of batting there is just about. No problem so far. Why say never? LOL
