Default flannel precuts and backing

When I've used flannel in the past I have prewashed it several times - especially if I was using it as backing to a regular cotton top. Then I've washed the finished quilt as another safeguard to the dreaded shrinkage for which flannel is famous.

Now I'm working with flannel fat quarters which I did not prewash. I'll be using flannel for the backing. To prewash that backing or not?

Thoughts?

In my book it is "All or nothing."

If you can't pre-wash all the fabrics in a quilt (because some are pre-cuts) then don't wash the backing.

That's what I thought. Just never used a flannel backing that I did not prewash - of course, never used flannel pre-cuts before either! The flannel fat quarters are luscious - soft, thick, wonderful. Now to find flannel for the backing that is of the same quality!

Keepsake Quilting has thick soft flannel. I have made several quilts from their kits and the flannel is top quality.
