Does anybody remember the measuring apparatus that was around six inches off of the table? The fabric was pulled through a slit and a round dial gauge with hands like a clock {?]or scale showed the yardage. Then the fabric clerk would push a lever which made a rip in the cloth. The fabric was then torn right in front of you and not cut with a scissors. In the rare instance that the print was all off grain you knew it right away. Anyway that was then and this is now, guess I am dating myself and a popsicle was a nickel.

I don't remember when they stopped selling fabric, but I do remember they had a very nice department.

I must be older than dirt, because I do remember when J.C. Penney's sold fabric. I started sewing when I was 8 yrs old, at the end of the 1940's they sold it then because mother had bought it there. I remember them selling it all thru the 50's and 60's. My first part time job was at JCP back in 1959 but not in the fabric dept. I think they stopped it probably in the early 70's in my area. Most of the big department stores sold it too. We also had a Belks (then known as Park-Belks) in our area that had fabrics. When K-Mart came to town, they too had nice fabrics, we had tons to chose from as so many people sewed their own clothing then.

when I was very young, my grandmother used to work in the fine china department in JC Penny's, because there were so many kids in the family(7) she would use her discount and purchase bolts of fabric for my mom to use to sew clothes for us, it was not always cotton, I think they quite selling fabric in the late sixties, by the way, I read something a while back about using a match or lighter to test for fabric content :D
