I have the June Taylor slotted ruler. I don't often use it to cut the strips themselves because you have to fold the fabric in thirds and that just doesn't work for me. It does work really well with fat quarters, though.

I do use the slotter ruler after I cut my strips. I can subcut two or thress strips at a time which saves me a lot time.

I love mine and use it all the time. I got a cut on one edge of a slot with the rotary cutter and my DH just sanded it a little
and it was like new. I find I cut much straighter with it. Put some sandpaper dots on the four corners and occasionally
throughout the bottom of the ruler and it will help it stay in place. They will fit right in between the slots easily.

I am not an expert by any means, but I too had a problem cutting straight. It's not the tools, it's the fact that they move as you cut. For me, even the best of rulers and templates moved until I added narrow strips of anti-slip stair tread tape to the backs of them. I cut strips about 1/4 -3/8" wide and 2 - 4" long, depending on the ruler or template. I placed them close to the edges and a couple of places in the middle, and haven't had a problem since. A roll goes a long ways and is available at hardware and big box stores. Before you replace your rulers, give this a try. You can also try strips of coarse grit sandpaper if you have any on hand

Regarding the log cabin template, I prefer the Quilt in a Day ruler. You cut the strips to the correct size, and have very little trimming. I tried the Creative Grids, and all that trimming just wasted time, while the markings were too confusing for this old grey head to follow. haha I prefer to cut accurately and sew carefully rather than trim everything to size, but that is just me, it may not work for anyone else.

Thank you for you very helpful replies and comments. Sounds like there are other alternatives to the June Tailor ruler which I will look at. No matter how hard I try, how careful I am, what rules I follow, etc., I can't cut a straight line. My best cuts come when I use 2 3-lb small weights on each end of my ruler, but that is never 100%. Maybe I'll do a little better if I get a "fancy" ruler. It's so frustrating to try and try but still come up with uneven strips and squares.

As far as the log cabin ruler, I believe I will invest in this as I really liked making the log cabin quilt I'm about to finish and would like to make more. I always overcut my pieces so I think this will help in trimming them down.

I have one of the first JT slotted rulers and a new one I won as a door prize, that was still in the plastic. I decided to compare. There is a big difference in thickness! The old one is much heavier and firmer. The new one will go on the guild's free table. I think they messed up by decreasing quality to make more profit per ruler. New users will not know the difference.

I had trouble no matter what ruler I bought until I bought the Quilters Select rulers. I get straight cuts unless I'm not focusing on what I'm doing, which is operator fault. I now have bought several different sizes. I had trouble with the slotted rulers, but then I figured that's just me.

I have June tailor shape cut plus for many years. Finally splurged on the stripology. Both do the same job. The stripology is what I use now as it is sturdier. Doesn't mean the JT is not worth the money. I used it for almost 2 decades with no issues. It was all I used for strips.

I love creative grid rulers. I made a pineapple quilt using the CG ruler and it is really nice to use. When I get caught up with making a baby quilt for a new granddaughter I am going to purchase a CG log cabin ruler.
