baste (long stitch) around the entire outside edge of a completed top before pinning/quilting because it keeps edges from opening up and stretching. It's especially helpful if there are lots of joints along the outside edge like what happens without sashing/borders.

yes, if you dont do this, you will not be accomodating the loss in the fold of the fabric, and the new triangle will not quite reach the corner edge......so sew a thread or two off along the line toward the corner,
