My Janome has a "lock stitch" available. It is available for both free motion and quilting using the walking foot. I have used it in both modes and have had good results ( sure beats pulling threads then having to bury them) but my inner quilter still wonders if this is a good idea. Any reason not to use this option?

I've used the lock stitch but many times I find it makes a bump stitch and I don't like that. Mine will put one tiny stitch back than 1 forward, with 3 in place. If the bobbin thread is not pulled up I also find it bunches sometimes in back. This is on a Janome DC2012.

I have the 10001. I never noticed having any bumps with mine. It does a 3 stitch in place.

I don't have that option on my older Bernina but I just do a back stitch and a few stitches in place. If it doesn't show, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have the Janome 8900 and yes, I think the lock stitch makes a bump because it is sewing in place, back stitch also makes a double layer of stitches, so I make a few tiny stitches, not in place, but moving every so slightly in one direction. Since I have some experience in removing stitches, :-) I can assure you it will not come undone.

My Janome 11000 has the lock stitch. I've used it a lot, but lately have decided I like the look and feel - no bumps - of burying the knot better. As I become a bit more experienced at quilting I also become a bit more discerning and critical of my own work. So, I am way more willing to take the time to do things like burying threads. But the difference is really pretty small, and as everything else in our wonderful craft, it is totally a personal decision.
