Took me too long to find the thread to edit it into the previous post, but I went into the construction in this thread with pictures and comments, more comments a couple posts down from the picture.
Virtual Quilting Weekend--April 19-21, 2019
If you look just at that bottom row in the picture above here you can pick out the identical quarter block units used, a single strip of background across the top, a diagonally divided band in the middle, and a color band along the bottom.
I did the diagonal seam by taking two rectangles and drawing the line on the diagonal, stitch on the line and cut off the seam allowance. You do have to watch that they are all the same direction, you can get distracted and make them point the other way.
Block as I did it was 12", each 1/4 unit 6". Because I was using the rectangle method it didn't work out well for a single width of fabric to make each different block which was ok because mostly I was working with various scraps and fat quarters. That won't be the same issue in making multiple blocks of the same fabric.

Maybe if you show your DIL some patterns that you are comfortable making and let her pick out the pattern then take her to the fabric store and pick out some yellows and purples. You must feel honored that she ask you to make her a quilt. Also, you could go on Pinterest and put in Yellow and purple quilts and maybe get an idea. Good luck and let us know what you and your DIL decide.

My first 2 quilts were Yellow Brick Road (just like Geema6) . My third quilt was a gingham style. The Yellow Brick Road comes together quick and easy, and you can do straight line or diagonal line quilting.

My first two quilts were Yellow Brick Road, and my third was a gingham quilt. Both were easy, quick and could be quilted using straight and/or diagonal lines. My photo of the gingham quilt would not upload; however, I hope this helps.

My go to pattern for a fast elegant looking quilt is this one. I would use all shades of yellow and purple not two colors.

Just put this on my to do list. I'd use light & dark yellows for flying geese.
