Default making my own dresden template

I love the new cutting ruler for this but I cant afford it. So I am cheating and making my own. I looked at the ruler and its 8" long. I estimated the width is 3" across at the top but not sure about the bottom. Im thinking 1". After I figure this out I will cut out a cardboard piece and then figure out the cirlcle size afterwards. Does this sound accurate to those that make dresden plates?

Or you could Google "dresden plate template" and see what's already out there, free and accurate. Here's one:

Dresden plate templates can be a variety of sizes. If I were to make a template, I would start with a circle, decide how many sections I wanted, and use a compass to mark the sections accurately. Then when you cut out, remember to add the seam allowances.
There are a lot of free ones out there. I like to buy those things when I have a half off coupon.
