If you post a link to the pattern, we may be able to suggest a way to avoid the templates all together. I rarely use templates because anything with straight lines is easier to cut with a ruler and rotary cutter. Congratulations on finding this new addiction😀

When I need templates I usually cut them out of old tissue boxes and the like. If I want to be able to see through them, I cut out the middle so the template is just the outline of the shape. I draw around the template onto the back side of the fabric and then cut the straight lines with a ruler and the curved lines with a scissors.
You could try this and try cutting around the templates as others have described and see which way works best for you.
