The lead needs changing on my Fons and Porter pencil -- I pulled off the top (where the eraser is) and dropped in a new "lead" but it doesn't work - when I press on the fabric the lead goes back in to pencil. Is there a trick to this? Unfortunately I didn't keep the packaging where there were probably instructions.

I had the same problem and had to insert the lead from the bottom and not the top. I didn't work it much but assumed the pencil doesn't function like others where you load from the top.

I had to take the little left over piece out; the one that since it's short when you push down it goes back in pen. then i put a new lead in and it takes awhile to get it to go down but I loaded it from the top.

I load from the top. I always put the replacement lead in the little tube that is in the middle of the pencil. Also as romanojg said you need to make sure the little bits are all out. Then you just click, click, click quite a bit until the new lead comes down. It sounds to me like you may still have a short piece of lead in the area where it comes out of the pencil.
