Lets see if I understand - When you say 4 patch triangles, are you looking for 4 Half Sq Triangles in a PinWheel pattern?? If so for a 6" square, each "patch" will finish up at 3" so un-finished it will be 3.5". To make the half square you add 7/8" to the unfinished size so you would start off with a 4 and 3/8" square.

It is a quarter square triangle, so you add 1 1/4" for a total of 7 1/4"
