I am making a memory quilt for my niece from scraps of her grandparents clothing. These scraps include sweatshirts, T-shirt’s, cotton and knit pajamas, embroidered handkerchiefs. Any suggestions regarding combining heavy and lighter weight cloth?

That sounds like it will be a very sweet, thoughtful gift. I have made several memory quilts... and I have found that interfacing helped me. The thinner or "stretchy" fabric were much easier to handle after the interfacing was ironed on.

A stabilizer on T shirts and sweatshirts as well has handkerchiefs is something that should be used to prevent shifting and stretching. On other cottons you may not need it. I am working on a memory quilt right now that has everything from flannels and almost leathery fabrics to thin wispy fabrics many of these pieces need a stabilizer to even begin placement in the quilt plan. Because of the nature of the quilt all the memories will be on the back of the quilt.
You will have many options to work with, be creative but do stabilize your blocks for the best results.

Oh wow you ladies are quick! Thank you both so much for your advice. I am new to this board and only a slight above what you would consider a beginner quilter. So all the help I can get is appreciated. I will move forward with this effort!

That is really pretty. I am going to try some of those triangle squares and half squares in this quilt that you show in your picture - as I said I am a kind of new and self taught quilter. What type of material are you using in that picture?
