Just the other day I drove past the house of a friend. In her front bay window was the anniversary quilt I made for her and her husband. My first thought was "Oh no, that quilt will become faded by the sun!" From the road it may look beautiful, but what about the damage from the sun? I felt so disappointed because all the time, money and the skill will soon have been made useless.

It may not be. Some windows now are UV resistant like they use in the museums and it prevents any damage from sunlight. I am sure she is so proud of it she wants the world to see!

on a friendly note You might give her call and suggest what what can happen if she leaves it in the window. I know I would.

I agree. Let her know that you appreciate how much she loves the quilt, enough to share with everyone, but that over time it could fade from the sun. People often don't realize how much damage the sun can do through those wonderful windows and glorious sought after sun.

There is also a UV protectant to spray on quilts so they won't fade. You might want to take her a can. It does work good. I made some shop samples and sprayed them and one in particular, was folded in half, so 4 years later when it was taken down you couldn't tell which side was exposed to light.

This friend is 57 yrs, wouldn't she know these kind of things? And how do you say it?

Where do you find this product yourstrulyquilts? That may be a solution for many others too.

The product is called Quiltgard and you can probably find it at your LQS.
Being 57 doesn't mean knowing about fabric and fading. Just say something like~"I know you love the quilt b/c it's hung up for everyone to see. But it needs to be protected from the sun. I've got some quiltgard to spray it with". And then go spray it.

I love the way you put this. And 57 doen't mean you know everything. Believe me I would know this.

I didn't mean to sound unfriendly. Just positive and assured, and decisive. Non-confrontational, pleasant, "in the know".
